DINAS Powys Voluntary Concern Centre held a special lunch recently, to acknowledge the work done by volunteers of the organisation. The lunch coincided with volunteers week, which is an annual event held nationally.
Pat Marsh, Co-ordinator of the Community Resource Centre said: "Every year, we recognise volunteers who give time to people in need, in a wide variety of tasks".
The 2002 recipient was Bill Jeffery, who drives the minibus taking the local residents, that are elderly or infirm to the supermarket. He said: "It is very rewarding, knowing you are helping others in need".
The volunteers that were put forward by their centres were presented with a certificate, from Assembly member Chris Franks.
Pat Marsh expressed her content, when she said that the volunteers lunch had been 'superb', and that it was attended by quite a few councillors.
The registered charity which was established in 1971, provides many different services for local elderly residents. These include free mini bus trips, organising lifts for hospital and hair dressers appointments. The centre also provides help with gardening, and have set up a library run for the residents.
Mrs Marsh explained the importance of the centre, when she said: "We provide help on a day to day basis, focusing on Dinas Powys residents".
One of the local people who benefits from the services provided by the centre said: "I wouldn't be able to get to the lunch club if the minibus didn't collect me". Another grateful resident said that the service is 'invaluable', adding: "I can only get to the letter box without getting into trouble".
The charity arranges many fundraising events to raise money for the centre. The next one due is a concert to be held in Dinas Powys with talent from the surrounding area. It will be held in November at the parish church.
The proceeds will go towards a new minibus, which is desperately needed by the centre. For further information on upcoming events or to offer help as a volunteer, contact Pat Marsh on 029 20513700.
