Junior championships at Windsor a mammoth hit

A RECORD number of young members at Windsor Lawn Tennis Club entered the Junior Championships which were played during the first week of the school holidays.

Eighty-six children aged six to 17 entered, and a mammoth 735 sets of tennis were played in the rounds, even before the semi-finals.

For the first time an Under-8 age group was introduced with some fiercely fought matches producing some excellent rallies.

Many of those who played are in their first year - but have caught the tennis bug!

The success of the tournament was due to a huge team effort by many of the parents and senior members who gave up an enormous amount of time to help with the organising, umpiring and catering (everyone is indebted to Christine Havard who showed the way by producing cheese toasties in vast quantities). Dave Swain gave Jim Ryan a hand with the barbecue, demonstrating his Kiwi expertise.

This was the first Windsor Junior Championship for Rob Cunningham, Windsor's recently appointed coach who coped magnificently.

Rob is running tennis camps throughout the summer holiday for all age groups and all abilities, for members and non-members. Details from 07909 987359.

Windsor LTC, in Evenlode Avenue, welcomes juniors and adults. Information from Cathy Cole, Junior Co-ordinator, tel 2070 2842, the web site, or Rob at the club. l Full results and more pictures next week.
