Complaints of dust and noise

PENARTH residents are up in arms over the amount of dust and noise coming from a building site at the end of their road.

On the David Wilson Homes plot in Dinas Road are the first of 400 homes. But the work has caused residents to complain to the Environmental Health Department about dust pollution, excessive noise from the site, and the hours of operation. So far they have received no reply.

Cllr Maureen Kelly Owen has joined the fight. She said: "I was absolutely horrified at the high level of site dust which I could taste, and is apparent in the whole of that area, and particularly in the gardens of the homes there."

Resident Hugh Bowsie, who lives in Byrd Crescent, explained that it was impossible to sit in his own garden due to the amount of dust in the air, and that windows had to remain closed, and washing could not be hung out to dry.

The roads have been constantly covered in mud from the site, which has dirtied many vehicles.

Mr Bowsie told the Times: "The cars looked like they had been rallying".

Another resident, also of Byrd Crescent referred to the "horrific noise" from the industrial stone crusher used on the site.

Cllr Kelly Owen said: "The residents have to be reassured that this nuisance is going to cease."

The residents of Dinas Road are also concerned because it is the only access route to the site at present, and as far as they know, there are no plans for an alternative access route to the new houses once they are built.

Regional managing director of David Wilson Homes, Anthony Taylor said: "We have organised the damping down of all the equipment". He added that the company was in discussion with the local authority about upgrading the central island, and the resurfacing of Dinas Road, which he explained would benefit existing residents, as well as the new ones.
