Hopes for park

YOUR August 8 photo feature was interesting in that it gave a range of reactions to Alexandra Park in its present state, which is the best that can be done on a limited budget.

One result of a Heritage Lottery Fund bid by the Vale has been to secure a provisional grant for a makeover of the Park costing up to £1.1 million.

The problem is that 25 percent match funding is required - money that the Vale cannot, at present, afford.

To witness the rebuilding of the bandstand, sea views opened up, lighting provided and the employment of a parks manager to encourage the use of the park by all age groups, would, we feel, be to see a great local amenity realise its full potential.

Our aim is to assist the Vale in the realisation of this dream, an effort in which we hope our elected representatives - at every level - will join.

In due course we will call a meeting to enlist local support and share information. Such a project is not achievable overnight but it is a good sign that a donation of £1,000 (by the Earl of Plymouth) has already been made.

We should, perhaps, emphasise that this HLF grant is not available for any other purpose.
