Barbie and the Kens celebrate

PENARTH youngsters have been celebrating after their success in the annual Vale of Glamorgan primary schools' road safety quiz.

Fairfield Primary School won the event, which was sponsored by the Sully-based Dow Chemical Company Ltd, and the runner up was Gwenfo Church in Wales Primary School.

It involved around 200 children from 27 of the area's schools.

The aim of the scheme is to make pupils more safety conscious and aware of their responsibilities, and is organised, on behalf of the Vale Council, by the authority's road safety manager, Mike Dacey, and road safety officer Sian Akers.

Presenting the prizes, which included a cup for Fairfield and cash prizes and vouchers for the schools and individuals respectively, was Dow Chemical representative Sandra Goodchap and Vale Council Cabinet Member (Economic Development and Leisure) Cllr Michael Harvey who, with a certificate as proof, recalled success in a similar competition some 40 years ago.

He congratulated the Vale road safety team on their organisation of the event and thanked Dow Chemical for their continued sponsorship.

The quiz was split into three rounds, with the first two consisting mainly of multiple-choice questions but with a few which proved a little more challenging.

In the third round the teams were required to identify a selection of road signs, and this was possibly the most successful phase in terms of popularity and results.

With each team required to enter a name, schools were also congratulated on this inventiveness and, among the best were 'The Desperate Measures' and 'The Luck of the Welsh' (High Street Primary, Barry), 'More than Speechless' (St Bride's Major) and the 'Pygmi Monkeys' (Victoria Primary, Penarth).

The winning Fairfield team were 'Barbie Girl and the Three Kens' with Gwenfo known as 'The Five Who Arrive Alive.'
