Dinas cruise to six wicket win

DINAS POWYS First XI returned to winning ways on Saturday with an easy win at Blaengarw after dismissing the home side for just 102.

Richard Lewis dismissed both opening batsmen, then Ian Southwell produced a stunning run out with a direct hit from the boundary. Meanwhile Steve Hudson bowled a remarkable unchanged spell of 15 overs, 11 maidens, 3 wickets for only 8 runs.

Steve Bussell and Anish Patel each took a wicket, while there were catches for Andrew Ford, Pete Colley and Geoff Colley (2). Southwell then finished off the innings with yet another run out.

A target of only 103 was never going to set any problems, and Dinas cruised to a 6 wicket victory, Ford top scoring with 45 not out.

However, the Second XI suffered a disappointing 5 wicket defeat against bottom of the league opposition at Parc Bryn-y-Don. Asked to bat first, Dinas slumped to 40 for 4 in the first 10 overs against some unexpectedly good swing bowling. Opener Tom Davies held the innings together, and James Richardson clubbed a few boundaries, but when Davies was 9th out for 43, Dinas failed to bat out their 45 overs and were dismissed for 152.

When Blaengarw batted, opening bowlers Rob Shaw and Gareth Evans beat the bat on numerous occasions without managing an early breakthrough. Runs were slowly accumulated, and Dinas never looked like bowling out the opposition, who eventually reached their target in the 44th over.
