Commuters to find shelter

DINAS POWYS commuters are looking forward to seeing the finished result of their local train station, which is undergoing a makeover.

Minister for Environment, Sue Essex, welcomed new shelters at eight train stations in and around Cardiff as an important step in encouraging people to use public transport in the city.

She said: 'I am delighted that Railtrack are recognising the importance of up grading rail stations. This scheme will help to encourage people to leave their cars at home and use public transport for short journeys to work and shopping.'

The plan is for Dinas Powys train station to have both shelters replaced, one of which has already been completed.

The downside track, which sees trains travelling away from Cardiff has already had its new shelter. The upside track, which sees trains travelling into Cardiff is presently undergoing an improvement. The base has already been installed, and the shelter will be up within a week or so.

The total cost of the Dinas station makeover is £75,000, and this includes the movement of the upside shelter closer to the station.

The shelters will remain approximately the same size as before, with the upside one measuring nine metres by 1.5 metres.

The improvement of public transport standards goes along with the Welsh Assembly Government's strategy to encourage more travel by rail.

The project for shelter renewals in the Cardiff area commenced in July, and is due to be completed in September.

Under the programme, twelve shelters at eight train stations have been replaced. The trains at Dinas Powys station are running as normal, and are not affected by the maintenance work going on there.
