Youth project's cash injection

A PENARTH Youth Project has received a massive cash boost.

The local group were recently awarded a grant for £170,059, by the Community Fund, which distributes money from the National Lottery (Lotto).

The Penarth Youth Project Limited, which is part of The Information Shop, situated on Stanwell Road, was awarded the three year grant, which will go towards staff salaries, recruitment costs, rent expenses, staff training and travel costs.

The project has been running for four years, and the last grant ran out this summer, which meant the centre has been relying heavily on donations.

The centre has a user group, which consists of a dozen young people, that meet every week for discussions, and attend the management committee meetings. Centre manager, Anna Jones, said the centre was established because Penarth was 'lacking in youth provision.'

The project aims to provide information, advice and support to young people, aged 11 to 25.

Trained youth workers and volunteers are on hand to offer information, support and guidance on all issues affecting young people, such as education, employment, health, money and family. A free counselling service is also available.

The centre deals with on average, 700 young people every month. They plan to redecorate the meeting room, and carry out extensive work on the basement, which will need damp proofing and a new floor.
