25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Penarth Times of August 19, 1977:

* Fears have been expressed that the proposed sale of cars on a main road site adjacent to the Merrie Harrier traffic lights could prove a hazard to motorists.

* Last Sunday, August 14, was a special day in the life of Holme Tower, our local special hospital run by the Marie Curie Memorial Foundation. It was the dedication of the new sun lounge provided for the comfort and enjoyment of the patients.

* Mr George Dawson, of Chantry rise, controller for Personnel and Industrial Relations with Wales and the Marches Telecommunications Board, retires this month after 42 years service with the Post Office.

* A much improved Mansell and Margo Squire won the eighth summer points summer race for Enterprise Class Dinghies held by Penarth Yacht Club last Sunday.

* One of Penarth's all-time darts greats Eddie Bousie (Railway Hotel) added yet another title to his great record last week when he won the Summer Singles Championship for the first time.

10 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Penarth Times of August 21, 1992:

* Work will start in Penarth next year on a major sewage scheme which will have considerable implications for local people.

* Five teenage boys were airlifted to safety from storm-lashed Sully Island in an RAF rescue helicopter at the weekend after their lightweight tents blew away in strong winds and driving rain.

* Having danced in the presence of Royalty at the age of 16 in the West End, it would have seemed natural for Lisa-Miranda Meggitt to have gone to London to pursue her career. However, she opted to continue her education and is now nearing the end of her BA Honours degree in Theatre Studies at the University of Glamorgan.

* In an effort to increase the profile and consciousness of environmental issues, the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council has become one of the first authorities in Wales to employ an environmental audit officer - 27-year-old Sam Whelan.

* Miss Hazel Dickson, was chosen as Penarth's in Bloom's best disabled gardener. The garden is specially constructed with wheelchair access to all parts.
