I MUST concur with last week's comments (Exam Farce). The call from the major political parties is Education! Education! Education! A further promise from the government is that, shortly, 50 per cent of the population will be in higher education.
The logic behind this is highly questionable. Academic coinage has been debased.
Quality is now being overtaken by dubious, runaway quantity.
Many schools, universities, etc, are producing a plethora of qualifications, many not worth the paper they are printed on.
Today's education "experts" showed concern themselves with the fate of those manual/semi-skilled workers, who had no need for "higher" qualifications in order to perform their daily tasks.
There was a time when the likes of firemen, scaffolders, army corporals, gas mantle packers, etc, kept the country in operation.
I am reminded of the parable of the King who "to the top of the tree promoted everybody. When everyone is somebody, then no-one's anybody"
