Record breaking results yet again

PENARTH GCSE pupils were celebrating last week after achieving record-breaking results once again.

GCSE grades improved for the 14th successive year, with more than one in five GCSE entries being given an A or A*.

After being awarded 12 A*s and two As for her GCSEs, Lisa Knight, of Clove Place, Penarth said she was "very pleased".

"My parents are paying for me to take my friends out for a meal tonight and my aunt is giving me some money, so it's time to celebrate!

"I didn't expect to do quite as well as this, but I did work really hard," she admitted.

Despite many claiming that the improved grades are the result of falling standards in the GCSE exam, students at Stanwell School say the work is still challenging.

After receiving receiving 2 As, 7 As, 2 Bs and a C at GCSE, Clare Williams, from Sully, said:

"I'm really happy because most of my results have gone up a lot since the mocks.

"I don't think GCSEs are too easy. There are so many subjects to do, it's a real struggle. There's hardly any time to revise."

Girls continued to outperform boys in the exam.

The percentage of females achieving grades A*-C in Wales has now reached 65.7% while for males it is 54.9%.

Stanwell School pupil Vicky Evans, of St Augustine's Place, thinks that girls concentrate more in class. "Boys tend to go out to see their friends more than girls," she said.
