I MUST agree with Brian Stephens' comments in his letter published in last week's Penarth Times, that it is pleasing to hear that the council will be repairing the existing dangerous steps from the esplanade to the beach.
However, I wish to reply on behalf of the Yacht Club to his comment about the dinghies which we are allowed to store in front of the club.
Does he realise Penarth is a seaside resort and boats are traditionally part of the nautical scene? During the summer they are used up to four times a week for RYA approved sail training programmes providing courses for some 60 beginners each year.
Our training scheme has produced numerous Welsh squad sailors, national champions and Wales' only Olympic medallist at Sydney 2000.
Mr Stephens suggests that this bastion be filled in to provide an uninterrupted level area. I agree, and it would also allow the club to provide improved facilities for the future of sail training for interested townsfolk.
May I suggest that your writer takes note of the opposite side of the esplanade where he will observe the Yacht Club and the adjacent restaurant looking in pristine condition after their recent redecoration.
Finally, may I extend an invitation to Mr Stephens to contact me with a view of welcoming him to Penarth Yacht Club, where I can show him the facilities we provide.
