PENARTH youngsters celebrated the end of their summer garden challenge recently, with a splendid barbecue, attended by many of the local community.
The youth club members of Byrd Crescent Community Centre set themselves the challenge of clearing an area of waste land situated in their grounds.
The project began on August 5, and took just under eight weeks in total to complete. The final touches were added last week, ready for the celebration, which was held on September 19.
Several local councillors attended the evening event, as well as members of the community and all the hard working volunteers.
Their aim was to create an environmental area, which would not only benefit themselves, but also the older people who use the centre.
The fifteen young people taking part had to remove debris from the ground before preparing it, and then laying soil, securing picnic benches, before finally adding the plants.
The garden was designed with two separate areas - one for the general community and the other for members of the youth club.
Youth worker Sue Lloyd explained that the members of the club, who are aged 11-18 years completed their tasks during their week night sessions at Byrd Crescent.
She added: "The children have worked really hard, and fortunately, the weather has been fine throughout the challenge."
The youngsters were working towards a Bronze Youth Achievement Award, which involved completing a series of mini challenges, throughout the project.
The Byrd Crescent Community Centre received funding totalling £3,386 from the Prince's Trust, to cover the cost of materials, refuse disposal and tools.
