Bad old bins

I HAVE recently moved to Penarth Haven and am delighted to be here on the waterfront, in a modern house and with good local amenities.

I moved from Dinas Powys, where, about ten years ago, the 'wheelie bin' was introduced.

Having lived in Germany for years, it is clear that the wheelie bin is better in many ways.

They are, of course, used throughout France, Switzerland and most of mainland Europe. They are more hygienic and less likely to cause any injury to the user - such as back strain on lifting.

To my surprise, the new developments in Penarth still have their refuse collected as it was in Victorian times, with men lifting bins by hand. It is disappointing that modern systems have not been introduced in the Vale.

There is a strong argument in favour of the council providing for the collection of re-cycleable materials. It is a poor reflection on our council, and Wales in general, that this is still not available.

The council will, of course, say that improved services cost money and would result in greater taxation. That is a poor excuse for continuing with unhygienic Victorian style refuse collection.
