Youngsters tune up for glitzy galas

PENARTH'S talented youths have just a few days left to enter the prestigious Vale of Glamorgan Young Singer and the Young Instrumentalist competitions.

Both events, which will be staged on the weekend of November 9 at Barry Comprehensive School, Port Road, Barry, have a closing date of Wednesday, October 26.

They are open to all singers aged between ten and 22 years, and all instrumentalists aged between ten and 20 years.

And although the competitions are open, there are special prizes for the best competitors living in the Vale.

The competition is designed to give all entrants, including beginners, the opportunity to experience performing before an audience, perhaps for the first time. However, the standard of the finals is high with cash prizes of £1,200 to be won.

There are three age groups for the instrumentalists: ten to 12 years; 13 to 15 years and; 16 to 20 years, and three age groups for the singers: ten to 13 years; 14 to 17 years, and; 18 years to 22 years. Trophies are awarded to the winners of each section. All winners and finalists receive cash prizes and certificates.

There will be an award of £100 made to the music departments of the schools attended by the winners of each section in the finals competitions.

This year Music in the Vale welcomes back and thanks the Vale of Glamorgan Council for its renewed sponsorship.

Organisers also thank Fordthorne of Cardiff, Dan Evans (Barry) Ltd, and all those who have made individual contributions, for their continued financial support.
