Library winners

DINAS POWYS youngsters attended a special certificate presentation last week, due to their success at the Reading Planet scheme.

Over ninety children gathered at Dinas Powys library last week, in order to receive their Reading Planet certificates from community librarian Melanie Weeks.

This national scheme for children, involved the participants reading a set number of books over the summer holidays.

This year's reading game was held from July through to September, and was available to children aged four-13 years. The theme was 'space and aliens', and the youngsters had to read six books from their local library, in order to successfully obtain a certificate.

During the game, children received alien stickers, and a bookmark after reading two books, a pencil after reading four books, and a medal and certificate after completing six books.

For each book they read, the children had to write down the author and title on their special collector folder, and give the book a star rating.

All nine libraries in the Vale took part in this initiative, which has been running for the past four years. The national scheme has been established to encourage literacy, and to show children that reading is fun.

This year has been the most successful summer reading scheme to date with over 1300 Vale children joining in. The Reading Planet formed part of the Vale libraries' summer programme 'Blast off with books'.

At Dinas Powys library, children enjoyed storytelling, craft sessions and a cartoon workshop. To join the Reading Planet, you must be a library member.
