Small price

I HAVE been much saddened by both the excessive damaging of the lime trees in Wordsworth Avenue, and the enthusiastic support for same, expressed by a number of the area's residents in last week's Penarth Times.

During the summer months, my car, too, gets coated in sap, but I regard this as a small price to pay for the pleasure of living in an environment enhanced by the presence of these lovely trees and their non-human inhabitants.

The growth of these trees used t be properly controlled by a programme of regular pruning at the end of the growing season.

This practice was abandoned many years ago, leading to the present situation.

I have spoken to a number of people with specialist knowledge, all of whom have indicated that the damage to these trees is such that some will not survive and those that do will take many years to recover.

I very much regret this wholly unnecessary degradation of the environment, as do a number of my neighbours.
