Shop to close after 14 years in town

A LONG-SERVING community shop is set to change hands which will mean the end of 14 years of service.

Trish and Harji Patel will be leaving their Shine Till Nine shop on Hickman Road on November 1.

The Patels have lived in Penarth for 19 years and will be moving to Grangetown.

Trish, 41, said: "We are sad to be leaving the shop after so many years but we both need a rest from the long hours.

"We know a lot of the customers and will always chat to them when they come in the shop."

She added that everyone has been very friendly and the children of Penarth will be sorry to see the sweets go.

Harji, 42, also known as Harry, is taxi driver for Ktaxis and has worked alongside Trish for 14 years.

He said: "I would like to send out a big thank you to all our loyal customers. We have been a part of the community for all our time here."

They have two children Nisha, 20, and Jiten, 19, both at university.

Shine Till Nine is the only shop to stock jarred sweets.

At one time the shop had more than 200 different types of sweets . Regular customer Robin Brown, of Hickman Road, who has four children, said: "The kids will miss the sweets. And the shop is very convenient if we forget to by anything for the children's packed lunches."

He added that all the residents will miss the friendly approach of the Patels and the children will have to go to another shop for sweets.

Another regular, John Flanagan, former mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan, said: "It is a great loss to the community and I am very sad to see them leave."
