A DINAS POWYS man has won a prestigious prize for coming top of his degree course at university.
David Lloyd, 22 who grew up in Caer-Odyn Road was awarded the prize for the best first class honours degree at Bristol University.
He went to St Cyres School in Penarth and after doing his GCSEs he took A-level Maths, Physics and Art.
The degree is MEng (Hons) Engineering Mathematics (First Class Honours) and the award was from the Institute of Mathematics and Applications.
He said: "I had to work hard to get my degree and all my other exams. At one stage I wanted to do an art foundation course but I decided on maths instead.
"I enjoy using maths for practical uses. At the moment I am doing my PhD but I am not sure what I will do afterwards."
He added that although he was doing some teaching at the university, he did not fancy becoming a teacher.
The IMA award two prizes in each institute for the most outstanding achievement.
Each winner receives a special certificate and a year's free membership of the institute.
David's father Mike Lloyd said: "We are immensely proud of David because he has done it all himself. I am very pleased that the university got the best out him."
He added that he thought the second year of university was the key to David's success because he decided he wanted to do well.
A good result in his second year meant David realised he could do very well and continued his hard work.
Now he can push himself even more with the PhD and his father hopes David will prosper in the future.
David's mother Janice Lloyd said: "We are very proud of him. There are enormous possibilities for him in the future.
It will be interesting to see where his gift will take him."
