EXTRACTS from the Penarth Times of November 4, 1977: Members of Penarth Town Council's Finance Committee have agreed to make grants totalling £690 to 15 local organisations which applied for financial assistance.

The new Rector of Penarth the Rev N Hilary Collins was pictured with his wife Eleri and daughter Katherine after his Institution and Induction at St Augustine's Church last week.

Concessionary bus passes for OAPs should be reinstated as soon as possible and the present tokens system scrapped, the Vale Parliamentary and General Purposes Committee decided on Monday.

Mrs Betty Owen, Manageress of the Bollom Dry Cleaning branch at Windsor Road, Penarth, has won a bicycle in a company competition.

Seven-year-old Claire Rimmer of Murch Junior School, Dinas Powis received a prize from local RSPCA Inspector, Mr Roy Gee, and Mr John of Penarth Fire Service for winning a poster competition on the subject of Safety of Pets on Bonfire Night.

Six-year-old Sian Gibbins of Clive Crescent, Penarth has won a consolation prize in the national letter writing competition run by the Post Office.

Rachel Crates and Emma Jenkins of the 7th Penarth Guide Company were recently presented with their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.

Fears have re-emerged that plans to build flats on a controversial site in the north of Penarth could lead to ground instability and put other houses at risk.

At the October meeting the Penarth Society welcomed Mr Alan Thorne, who addressed members on the cases against the proposed Cardiff Bay Barrage.

A life on the ocean blue awaits Barry pensioner Gwyn Williams after winning first prize in a raffle organised by international aid charity Oxfam.

Chairperson Mrs Joan Toye extended a warm welcome to members at a well attended meeting of Penarth OAPs on Saturday.

Guitarist Thomas Emmerton, of Holmview Cottage, Penyturnpike Road, Dinas Powys, successfully defended his title by winning the Longwell Green Eisteddfod this year on October 26.
