Banger abuse

THIS IS the worst year of fireworks abuse I have ever experienced in Penarth.

It started in early October and has been absolutely relentless. Fireworks are being let off at any time of the day or night and not just in fields or parks, but also in the street.

A group of young people shot fireworks from a side lane into my road during broad daylight and into the path of passing cars.

One of those fireworks only narrowly missed a neighbour of mine who was, understandably, very shaken.

She feared for her own safety and that of others, but was more or less told off by the female operator for ringing 999.

For many years now, people have been warned about the dangers of fireworks but, in spite of these warnings, the situation has gone from bad to worse.

I read in the papers that this has also been the worst year ever for Hallowe'en night.

Now that this abuse of fireworks has got totally out of control, I think it's high time to restrict their sale to organisers of public displays and to possibly just one week before the event.

I think people's safety and peace of mind should take priority over shopkeeper's greed.
