Pavilion may regain splendour

ENARTH Pavilion is again under discussion to find a suitable way to update and refurbish it.

Vale of Glamorgan Council have re-started the debate to turn the pier into a land mark once more.

A leading councillor for Penarth Clive Williams said: "I am not alone in wanting to get something done about the pier and pavilion in Penarth.

It is in a state of disrepair and such a building should be restored to its former glory."

He continued by saying that he is involved in trying to get comedian Stan Stannet to run the pavilion and promote the project.

His idea is to turn the rooms into an area for light entertainment but there were other suggestions for the space.

Many years ago the pier was a place where people could go to see the likes of Frank Ifield, Petula Clark and Stan Stannet.

When or if the walkway is built to Penarth marina, a rejuvenated pier will add to the attractions available in the town.

At the present time the pavilion is used by a gymnastic club but as Clive Williams said: "The club deserves a better space to train in and better facilities to use."

At the meeting of the Vale Council Executive Cabinet for Economic and Environmental Regeneration on Tuesday November 5 the pier was discussed.

Vice Chairman of the Penarth Society Graham Robertson said: "Apart form the Paget Rooms there is not another major venue for the town.

"That is why the pavilion would be a wonderful centre piece for Penarth and the Vale as a whole."

A feasibility study has already been carried out.
