Hospital plans for roundabout

LLANDOUGH Hospital has plans to put a road in to help traffic congestion.

The proposed road will take traffic from Penlan Road as the present access to the site.

Head of planning for the Vale of Glamorgan, Rob Thomas said: "The plans for the roundabout system show that the hospital has a commitment to finding a new access for the site.

"The present access copes with a lot of traffic. If the plans go ahead there is potentially a lot of benefit to the area."

The roundabout system would be at the junction of Redlands Road and Eastbrook Road. With traffic lights at Penlan Road by the Merrie Harrier.

A resident of Penlan Road Frederick Livermore said: "It is a good idea because it will take a lot of the traffic off the road.

"It's dangerous for the local school children trying to cross the road when it is so busy." Other developments are planned for the site.

These are a new 20 bed EMI unit on the eastern end of the hospital and several wards on the hillside meadow.

The road would pass Llandough Church and Corbett Road then lead up to the hospital. There is an extra car park planned and two more roundabouts along the road.

Vale of Glamorgan Councillor for Llandough, Jane Maw Cornish said: "I have concerns about the disruption to the village if the road is built.

"But apart from that it is a good idea.

"I have put forward a suggestion to the council. So that the heavy traffic gets on to the site via the Merrie Harrier and not the Leckwith end."

She added that a restriction on work at the weekends should also be enforced. If the road is built the traffic going through Penlan Road and Llandough village will be considerably reduced.

The planning committee hope to have their decision by Christmas.
