SCORES of Penarth residents streamed into the town centre on Friday night to see the annual switching on ceremony.
Streets were packed out as the town's mayor David Clapham flicked the switch to light up the roundabout Christmas tree.
Stanwell Road and Windsor Road were also lit.
Father Christmas and his sleigh pulled up to entertain the children.
And Penarth Community Arts Project lead Santa's parade into the town.
Sweets and balloons were given out to happy children as the festive season begins.
Money was collected by Penarth Town Council, which organised the event, and Penarth Round Table.
The cash raised will be used to make hampers for needy people in the town.
Crowds of delighted people were entertained by the Cogan Coronation Choir and the Jane Clarke Dancers.
There was a carousel and the traditional glow sticks were on sale.
Mayor David Clapham said: "It was a lovely ceremony.
I was quite moved by the cheer from the people waiting for the lights to be switched on. "There were lots of families and children enjoying the entertainment.
"The Penarth Community Arts Project escorted Santa and it was marvellous to see everybody having a good time.
"Cogan Coronation Choir started the night off with their rendition of carols.
"Elsed Avenue Scouts were selling their hot chestnuts.
"I would like to thank the Round Table and all the helpers for making the night such a success."
He added that it was the first time he had switched on the lights and such occasions were a delight for a mayor.
Some shops opened with great success as they had steady business on the night.
What more could a town want to start the festive season rolling?
The weather kept fine throughout the occasion.
There was chill in the air but the lights and the sound of Christmas cheer warmed everybody's hearts.
