Fund-raisers get Dutch courage

PENARTH daffodils will be exchanged for tulips in Amsterdam to help a locally-based charity.

A group of Penarth people is gathering funds for Bobath, an organisation which offers therapy to cerebral palsy sufferers.

The team of four has to get to Amsterdam on £20 and only has two days to make it.

The team includes Sarah Philips and Richard, Neville and Andrew Nicholson.

Richard of Clive Place, Penarth has to exchange Welsh daffodils for Dutch tulips.

He said: "We are looking for sponsorship for the flights to Amsterdam which cost £42 each.

The Windsor has kindly offered to let us have a quiz night in February and we have sponsorship for the journey to Heathrow."

He added that his daughter has cerebral palsy and he is co-founder of the Bobath Centre in Cardiff.

The Tulips from Amsterdam Challenge will start at the Cardiff Marriott on Friday, February 28.

Contestants have to be at the Amsterdam Marriott by Saturday, March 1, no later than 6pm.

Each participant has to raise at least £500 for Bobath.

Sarah Philips, of Wordsworth Avenue, Penarth, said: "The money raised from the event will enable Bobath to provide therapy to children in Wales who have cerebral palsy.

This is caused by damage to a baby or young child's brain.

It affects the child's ability to move and develop in a normal way."

She added that there is no cure for cerebral palsy but the specialist therapy can teach a child to control their body more easily.

The Bobath Centre in Whitchurch, Cardiff is one of only three official places to offer the world renowned therapy in the UK.

It has been open for ten years and treats children from all over Britain.

All the teams will be dressed in Dutch costumes.

The Penarth group is looking for people who have Dutch clothing.
