Architect wins award

A PENARTH architect has won a prestigious award for his house design.

Graham Brooks designed the impressive New Horizons house in Cog Road, Sully, which has received recognition from the Royal Society of Architects in Wales.

The Dinas Powys resident, who practised in Penarth until his retirement said he was delighted with the honour.

He told the Times: "I am honoured to get such an accolade from the Royal Society of Architects in Wales.

The design is simple and based on Scandinavian buildings.

Assessors were impressed by the simple, well-planned internal layout with an abundant use of fair-faced brickwork and naturally finished timber ceiling."

He added that the house is functional without being too uniform.

The building was designed for Graham's son and daughter-in-law.

This design also won the Royal National Eisteddfod Plaque of Merit in 2001.

For more than 30 years Graham worked in Penarth as part of Hird and Brooks architects.

As a practice Hird and Brooks won 14 awards this is another in a long line of experts' approval.
