Cans mean cash for 'green' students

A PENARTH school has canned all the opposition to come top of the recycling table in the Vale.

St Cyres School, Penarth collected some 230,000 aluminium cans which is more than any other school in the area.

The promotion run by Aluminium Packaging Organisation (Alupro) is called 'Make things happen'.

By taking part in the promotion, the school has collected environmental points which have been exchanged for environmental vouchers worth £200.

The vouchers will be used to help the school fund alucan recycling banks so they can recycle even more cans.

Headmaster of St Cyres School Brian Lightman said: "I am delighted that our school has been so successful.

"We are committed to the Eco schools project because it is important that the young learn to be responsible.

"Everyone produces so much waste we have a responsibility to recycle."

He added that if schools educate the adults of tomorrow to recycle it will be good for everyone.

Operations manager for Alupro, Ruth Meeke said: "St Cyres School has topped the alucan recycling league in the Vale.

"They have done exceptionally well and are continuing with their can collections." She added that the school has a team of volunteer recyclers who make the project a success.

Cans were collected by Sully Skills Development Centre who sort and recycle the aluminium collected by schools, companies and organisations in the area.

Head of the science department at the school Bill Wilson said: "Our recycling collections have been successful because we have a dedicated environmental committee.

"They organise the sorting and collecting of alucans.

"It has been a difficult job sometimes, but it's been worthwhile.

"We can now fund the improvements needed for recycling banks."

With the world using so many goods with packages which are thrown away. There is no doubt that recycling is the way forward and learning about it is a good way to start.
