DVD review 'All About a Boy'

BASED on a novel by the acclaimed writer Nick Hornby, About A Boy is a great example of British comedy.

Subtle and smooth, the whole film is a joy to watch.

Hugh Grant, with a far better haircut, is quite sexy in his typically English way.

He does not stammer over his words as was his style in Four Weddings and a Funeral, but delivers his lines in a really ordinary way that makes you feel like he isn't acting, but he actually believes what he's saying.

Hugh plays Will Freeman, a 38-year-old loafer with no aim in his life.

He embarks on a new crusade to date single mums, confident he can enjoy a guilt-free parting when the fun is over.

But that brings him into contact with the unique Marcus.

Played by the convincing Nicholas Hoult, Marcus is a 12-year-old boy with a weird mum and difficult life.

In a totally unpatronising way, the child ends up teaching the man the values of living and relationships.

This is a great film for family viewing.

Half chick-flick, half boy-zone, there is every reason to watch one of the best British movies around at the moment.
