Diamond duo met at seaside show

A PENARTH couple, who have seen more than 60 years of life together, say they love each other more than ever.

Eighty-five-year-old Olga Evans, of Ditchling Court, Penarth, has been married for six decades to Bernard, 88.

She said: "We met at a performance of The Merchant of Venice in Blackpool in 1941 where I was living.

"At the time I was with another man at the show."

But Olga told the Times: "As soon as I sat next to Bernard I knew he was the one for me."

They tied the knot at St Andrews Church, Cleveleys, Lancashire, on December 19, 1942.

Bernard said: "We both like the theatre but we do not get the chance to go now.

"I was a leading light in the Barry Arts when it was first established in 1971.

Olga did the choreography for the Arts."

The happy couple have a son called David and a daughter named Frances.

David has two children and is a senior partner in a Cardiff solicitors practice.

Frances is married and is a senior researcher at London University.

As a young woman, Olga won the All England Ballet Trophy and went on to teach dance.

She said: "I stopped at the age of 80 because I thought it was time to stop dancing.

"Towards the end of my career I taught older people who wanted to learn dance to keep themselves fit."

In the 1970s both Bernard and Olga played bowls.

Olga played for Wales.

Bernard and Olga have lived in Cardiff and Sully and now live in Penarth.

And Bernard used to work at Midland Silicone in Barry which was taken over by Dow Corning.

Then he took up the position of registrar at Barry Arts.

There are many reasons why the Evans' marriage has worked.

Bernard said: "My mother and father were married for 62 years so it is in the family to be married for a long time."

Let's hope they have many more years of happy marriage.
