Campaigners hold a public meeting

PENARTH campaigners are still fighting to get the money they need to match a Lottery grant for a local park.

Alexandra Park has been highlighted as an area of importance for the town and is in line to be re-shaped if the whole £1.1M funding can be found . Leading campaigner and member of the Penarth Society, Graham Robertson is looking to the local authority to provide the cash.

He said: "We have been fighting to get the money the park needs to make the site into a main attraction.

A survey of all parks in Barry and Penarth was commissioned by the Vale Council in 1998 to support bids for funds from the Heritage Lottery Fund's Urban Parks Programme."

A public meeting has been called by the society on Thursday, January 23, at 7.30pm, at the Trinity Rooms to discuss the issue.

The campaign has already won the support of many local dignitaries.

Penarth and Cardiff South AM, Lorraine Barrett, said: "Any support I can give to help the cause I am happy to give.

We must try to preserve the park for future generations."

Alun Michael MP, said: "A park is the lungs of a town and Alexandra Park is well loved. It is a piece of heritage we need to keep."

However, Penarth Town Manager, Steve Barrett said: "It is going to be hard for the Vale of Glamorgan Council to give money that they have not got in the first place."
