Pacifists send PM anti-war message

PENARTH pacifists have pledged their support for the campaign against war in Iraq by sending the Prime Minister a giant signed postcard.

Local resident Margaret Phelps, who organised the postcard, says something has to be done to show Tony Blair the strength of feeling against war.

She told the Times: "We have to do something ourselves because the Government has not given the people a chance to have their say.

Many people have signed the giant postcard."

As well as the postcard, a protest march has been organised for Saturday January 18, at City Hall, Cardiff, from 12pm.

Ms Phelps added: "I think the only reason that America wants to attack Iraq is because of its huge oil reserves."

Lorraine Barrett, AM for Penarth and Cardiff South, said: "While no-one wants to go to war, the Iraq situation is more complex than just saying yes or no to any war , under any circumstances.

It must be for the UN to take this issue forward."

MP for Cardiff South and Penarth Alun Michael said: "I understand people's concerns as war is the last resort.

I am confident that the Government played a significant role in the UN. It is a measured response to the threat posed by Saddam Hussein."
