Cinema review 'Star Trek Nemesis'

WHO WOULD have thought that the antics of Captain Kirk and Mr Spock back in the 1960s would have resulted in creating a fan base of millions?

Without its fans, the franchise would never have lasted through to this, its tenth feature. However, this one threatens to be the last mission of the Next Generation crew.

After seeing two of the crew mates get married, Captain Jean Luc Picard is assigned on a mission. Along the way, he meets Shinzon, an exact clone of his younger self.

Despite firstly wanting to help him, Picard discovers that Shinzon plans to exterminate the Federation and life on Earth too.

The films starring the Next Generation crew have had their ups and downs. Generations wasn't bad, First Contact was very good but Insurrection was dire.

Nemesis is the best film of the Next Generation franchise.

More action was promised and more action was delivered. Director Stuart Baird tones the action perfectly throughout.

I've always through of Baird as the 'ultimate hack' of action directing with films like Executive Decision and US Marshalls.

Fair enough, the films were not bad, it's just the action was poorly done. All is forgiven here though as he does everything perfectly.

Patrick Stewart is better than ever along with fellow crew members Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner, while Tom Hardy as Shinzon is excellent as you come to respect him even though deep down he is pure evil.

I'm no Trekkie and I never will be, but this film is sci-fi at it's best and the second best Star Trek film of them all.

You still can't beat the deadly, flying football from Star Trek IV though.
