Cash prizes for top PR students

A PENARTH postgraduate has come up trumps by winning first prize in a public relations competition.

Kate Lewis, 24, of Penarth Marina said: "I am very proud to get this award. I was surprised to be top of my class of 32."

She also won £100 from her write up of a strategy for Cardiff Bay Harbour Authority.

Kate added: "I love doing PR and I want to use my languages eventually because I have a degree in French and Spanish."

She continued: "I enjoy being creative and have thought about a career in journalism. But I would prefer to do broadcast not print journalism."

Other postgraduate students studying public relations at Cardiff University proved their potential as future employees.

Five students collected monetary prizes for their winning entries into the competition which is based on a real-life scenario.

The students are all part of the School of Journalism at Cardiff University which runs the industry recognised postgraduate course in Public Relations.

Kate Lewis, from Penarth won first prize for writing a community relations strategy in response to a brief set by Quadrant's chief executive, Bill Jenkins.

Kelly Teasdale, also from Penarth, and Caroline Titman, who lives in Cathays, came second and third respectively for their work which forms part of the Postgraduate Diploma in Public and Media Relations at Cardiff University.

Each year, Cardiff-based Quadrant sets an exercise based on a real life situation for the students and offers a total of £300 prize money to be shared between the five best students.

Quadrant's chief executive Bill Jenkins said: "We have supported the postgraduate course since it began - after all, today's students are tomorrow's employees.

"The response to the exercise was good with all the students truly appreciating the situation and coming up with realistic and practical solutions to the brief."
