Recycling rewarded

A PENARTH school has been rewarded for its excellent recycling record.

St Joseph RC Primary School was visited by Kirk the Frog who is a member of the Cardiff Waste Forum. The school collected 440 Yellow Pages, which would otherwise be thrown in the bin.

At the end of the month the school which has collected the most will be announced as the overall winner for the Vale.

Each class has also been deciding what sculpture to make with the telephone directories.

Co-ordinator of environmental studies and a teacher at the school Angela Spray said: "We are a very environmentally aware school.

It is important to teach the children now so they will be more careful with their rubbish when they are adults."

The chairman of the Vale, Harold Rees, said: "The council are pleased to support any initiative like this.

If we start with young people the environment will be better looked after in the future.

The scheme also saves the council money because by recycling the Yellow Pages it stops them being put in landfill sites."

There are many ways in which the directories can be re-used.

They can be made back in to paper, shredded to make insulation for houses and even made back into directories again.

Campaign manager for the Cardiff Waste Forum, Ellen Perryman, said: "The school have been so enthusiastic about this project.

That is why they were chosen to get this special visit."

Each year 650,000 Yellow Pages are distributed around the Vale and Cardiff.

If the directories were stacked on top of each other the pile would be the height of 30 Mount Snowdon's.
