Lucy chases her Canadian dream

A FORMER Stanwell School student is looking for funding to study at one of the best children's hospitals in the world.

Lucy Cooper, 22, of Hickman Road, goes to Bristol University where she studies medicine.

The hospital is in Toronto, Canada, and Lucy wants to go to there to study in its emergency medicine department for two months.

She said: "I have always wanted to become a doctor ever since the age of nine.

I think it is because I want to fix people who need help. In my future career I have many different options to decide on."

Lucy continued: "Orthopaedic surgery is something I would like to perform, especially in accident and emergency.

The act of saving somebody's life is very appealing.

"But I am also interested in psychology which unfortunately cannot be combined."

For the trip Lucy needs about £4,000 but has yet to get any response from willing contributors.

Her mum Allison Cooper said: "I know she has always wanted to be a doctor.

She had to study sciences at school so she could get into university.

As a girl she would get lots of sports injuries as a black belt in karate."

She added: "Lucy is interested in accident and emergency in particular.

But she has got a fascination for psychology and the workings of the mind."

The trip will be in Lucy's final year of university.

While in Toronto, Lucy would study their technology.

She said: "I will be able to make a comparison between the British medical system and the Canadian.

And the hospital there is a centre of excellence which will give me an invaluable insight into orthopaedic surgery."

Once Lucy leaves university she will be able to choose which area of expertise to go into. This trip will help her to decide what is the best option to take.
