At last we all agreed

I'M GLAD that at last the Penarth Labour Party and I agree on a matter of policy, namely that the sub post offices in Penarth need to be kept open (letters, December 30).

It is ironic in particular that just as the Vale of Glamorgan Council announces its scheme to build up to 400 houses immediately adjacent to Queen's Road sub post office, the post office announces closure.

It is noteworthy however, that Lorraine Barrett (Penarth Times, front page, January 30) does not go as far as to condemn the closure, but merely calls for "further consideration".

Will she now join me in condemning the actions of her own government which have a direct impact on the viability of post office services and on decisions for closure?

I refer to the pressure for payment of benefits and pensions to be made through banks rather than through post offices.

At this rate there will be no national postal service within three years; instead we will have a fragmented, privatised service, similar to the mess the Tories made of our national rail system.

But then, what can we expect from a Labour government that has abandoned all ideas of social responsibility and community concern?
