Morriston punished again

LAST SATURDAY, Dinas Powys AFC played host to Morriston, the side they defeated 4-0 in the cup the week before, in a Welsh League Division 2 clash.

From the kick off it looked like Dinas were up for this one! Morriston kicked off, Lee Vick picked up the long ball that was floated to the left from the kick off, he made a good run down the right to send in a perfect cross that no-one could get on the end of.

Morriston failed to clear which resulted in a corner. Geoff Poole took it with his usual pinpoint accuracy.

He found new signing Joe Vinderson who headed back across the goal for goal poacher extraordinaire Jamie Dix to head home, 1-0 after just one and a half minutes.

On the 14th minute new signing Joe, playing his first game for Dinas at the back got the first yellow card of the game with a reckless challenge in front of the home supporters.

Twenty-one minutes into the game Mathew Higginson showed why he received the Supporters' Man of the Match award.

Improving with every game, Mathew covered every blade of grass, putting in really telling tackles to ensure Dinas had their fair share of possession.

It was then Lee Street's turn to challenge ferociously for a ball in midfield, he collided with a Morriston midfielder and fell on top of him, but the referee decided it was a foul against Lee, and he got the second yellow card of the game.

It was then Leigh Vick's turn to shine, making a run down the right he spotted Geoff Poole over to the left, he passed the ball and Geoff ran onto it and hit it.

The ball flew from his trusty left foot to completely beat the keeper, only to find the bar denying what would have been a contender for goal of the season.

The game continued with Morriston matching Dinas in most areas, except goal chances, it was only professional defending by Danny Street, (who made a goal saving tackle), Robert King and new boy Joe Vinderson that denied Morriston any real threat on goal for the first 40 minutes. Morriston made a foray into the Dinas defence to see King miss a tackle on Morriston's Steve Sinoch who hit the ball sweetly to beat keeper Duncan Smith. One apiece, with just five minutes of the half remaining.

Half time came, and manager Paul Giles could be heard in the tea lounge giving the players a real blasting.

He then joined the supporters for the remainder of half-time letting the player's think about the points he had forcefully put forward.

His words must have been taken on board.

Straight from the kick off Dinas started playing some very attractive football.

Chances came quite quickly for Neil Jeremy, who fired over the bar, Robert King, making one of his runs from the back, hitting the ball onto the bar.

It was then Poole's chance with a free kick outside the box, which again beat the keeper to go just wide of the post.

Danny Street took the opportunity to carry the ball forward beating several Morriston players, he crossed a beautiful ball to Spencer Lamb, who tried to volley home with his left foot, only to see it go wide of the post. From the line it looked the perfect ball to head home.

Dinas were now beginning to dominate the game, King, on one of his forays forward pushed the ideal ball for Spencer Lamb (Maureen and Alan Giles Man of the Match) to run onto, with the keeper coming out to meet him, Spencer guided the ball past him to put Dinas in front at last.

Spencer was on fire now, every touch of the ball was outstanding, so much so that within two minutes he got his second, and Dinas's third.

Lee Street who was carrying an injury to his leg was then replaced by Knocker (Nathan Hosgood), who has been sidelined for several weeks with hamstring problems.

Knockers first touch of the ball showed how important he is to the overall performance of the team.

His quick footwork and ability to beat defenders resulted in a shot that was cleared off the line by a Moriston defender.

Good interplay between Knocker, Jamie Dix and Cinderella (Spencer Lamb) resulted in the ball being passed to Leigh Vick who fired home the Villagers fourth goal.

Knocker then had a hand in the fifth goal; a ball from Danny Street saw him take on several defenders to lay a wonderful ball on for Jamie Dix to get his second of the game.

With approximately 15 minutes to go Manager Paul Giles brought off injured captain Danny Street and Geoff Poole to give Rhodri Foote and Joe Taylor their chance to stake claims for regular first team football.

It was fitting that Knocker scored the final goal. Another through ball saw the Morriston defender make a mistake that Knocker quickly seized on to convert his first, and the sixth for Dinas.

Next week the team take a trip to Pontllanfraith, to carry on their crusade to win the league.
