Post debate

With reference to the recent debate over the closure of three Penarth Post Offices.

I don't take lectures from the Tories who closed Albert Road Post Office and put it in a shop in the busiest part of town where parking is at a premium.

They have under-invested in the Post Office for 18 years and it's no good bleating now.

Also, society has changed - more women work with their salaries and child benefit paid into bank accounts and more people use fax and e-mail than write letters.

No one wants to see sub post offices closed, but the Post Office is losing around £15 million every month.

I have asked the Post Office to look carefully at the impact on surrounding communities where they have proposed to close their counters, but I understand the majority of the postmasters have agreed to closure with some continuing to keep the shop open.

Bank accounts are not the only option for payment of pensions and benefits.

Post office card accounts can be opened, with payments paid direct and collected in cash from any post office.
