Rental costs turn drama into a crisis

A WELL established Penarth society have hit out at the high costs of rental for the town's popular Paget Rooms.

Penarth Operatic and Dramatic Society, who have been active in the town for the last 78 years, say they are struggling to meet the costs.

They have paid for hire of the Paget Rooms for many years with some discount on normal charges but PODS would like there to be greater discount - although they are reluctant to reveal the price they pay due to ongoing discussions with the Council.

Some groups have a reduction already, such as the WRVS Afternoon Club and Meggitt Dancing School, due to the nature and number of bookings.

Against the background of a report by the Penarth Town Council Clerk Edward Vick the Leisure and Amenities committee were recommended to consider the request.

In the report it is stated that PODS have expressed their concern that the increase in charges since 2000 has placed a heavy financial burden on the society.

It is also stated that on a previous request for discount the Council granted an increased incentive for extended booking of the rooms.

This was an increase from seven and a half percent to a ten percent discount on extended bookings of six days or more.

And if the Council committee is to continue to invest in regular maintenance and improvements to the Paget Rooms as well as its facilities a realistic charging structure needs to be in place.

Treasurer of PODS Brian Gardener said: "We have tried in the past to obtain a discount but have been unsuccessful.

"PODS are the main dramatic society in the town and we are a big hirer of the Paget Rooms - this is the biggest cost we have.

"We feel that we give a service to Penarth."

The society puts many plays on each year and uses the Paget Rooms regularly.

One such play was Run for your Wife which was a success when it was run last year.

Despite repeated attempts the Penarth Times were unable to contact the Town Council for further comment.
