Bike routes

THE Head of Evenlode School, Mr Jenkins, apparently sees the creation of cycle routes to the school as the solution to the double/triple parking by inconsiderate parents. This is not the case.

Firstly - the School is a Junior School, and as such only the final year will (arguably) be old enough to cycle to school.

This in itself therefore will mean that cycle routes will not result in significant improvement.

Secondly - some of the parents of these cyclists will still need to transport younger brothers and sisters to school by car.

Thirdly - will these children really be allowed to cycle to school in bad weather and/or in the hours of darkness?

Mr Jenkins says that 'some parents regularly leave their cars in the middle of the road to fetch their children'

Apparently neither the school nor the police have so far been able to control such irresponsible behaviour.

Cycle Routes would not make a significant difference.

But, in any case, the proposed works are particular to Westbourne Road and do not comprise a cycle route to the school, in respect of which four alternative routes have already been firmly rejected by the Council.
