Animal centre is set to close down

PENARTH'S RSPCA Animal Centre has closed because its building has fallen into disrepair.

Staff at the centre are to be made redundant and in some cases homeless as they live on the site.

An RSPCA spokesman said: "The structure of the building itself is unsound, with the fabric falling apart.

"The likely repair costs would be very substantial. The animal centre is to fully close down over a period of six weeks."

However, the branch trustees are confident that animal welfare will not suffer in Cardiff and the surrounding areas.

Ann Hughes Roberts, chair of the branch trustees, said: "We continue to be totally committed to animal welfare within the branch area.

We have a determination to replace the centre with a new centre that meets the needs of animal welfare in the capital of Wales and we would look to the people of Cardiff and the area to help us in this exciting new venture."

"The extra funding we can get from more shops will help to fund a new building."

The RSPCA spokesman yesterday said: "They are currently considering many options as to the way forward, including the possibility of finding a new site to build a new flagship animal centre for the capital of Wales.

"In the mean time, the branch has acted swiftly to ensure that alternative arrangements are in place for the animals, such as the network of foster homes and private boarding kennels.

"They will be finding new homes for the animals currently cared for in the centre and the remainder that cannot be rehomed immediately will be networked out to other centres, starting with RSPCA animal centres in Wales."
