A PENARTH school has been praised by inspectors as a "welcoming, happy and friendly community."

Describing the quality of life at Albert Primary and Nursery Unit as good, the inspectors said: "The school is successful in fostering a spiritual ethos where mutual respect and responsibility are reflected within a caring and supportive environment."

This follows the inspectors' January visit to the school, which has 307 pupils and 15 teachers.

They add that the aim of providing a "stimulating environment where youngsters develop positive attitudes, self disciplines and preparation for a life of work and leisure" is successfully achieved.

Good attendances, pupil behaviour and attitudes to learning and the overall quality of teaching are viewed as good aspects.

Observing that the school effectively promotes good attitudes and values, it is noted that pupils' spiritual, moral and social development is good and their cultural development very good.

Staff emphasise honesty, fair play and kindness.

They described head teacher Jenny Robbins, the deputy head teacher, governors, subject co-ordinators and teachers as providing good leadership and a clear sense of direction

The school's ethos for learning and sense of purpose is viewed as very good and inspectors praise the governors.

The quality of teaching was marked as good overall, and very good in 15 percent of lessons.

The quality of provision for children with special educational needs is also marked as very good, while children under five are viewed as being "secure and happy and show increasing confidence."

Standards of achievement were satisfactory or better in 100 percent of lessons, being very good in five percent and good in 75 percent.
