Focal point

PEDESTRIANISATION of Lower Glebe Street has been on the agenda for some 10 years. I appreciate some traders have concerns and some people are resistant to change, but something needs to be done to revitalise the town centre.

Many years ago, Alun Michael MP, brought all the agencies and organisations together and produced a report called Penarth Revival which contained a series of options ranging from a modest pedestrianisation scheme to a full blown one, but it seems we are still discussing it.

Lower Glebe Street, from the junction with Plassey Street down, gets very congested and a one way system through to Ludlow Lane would smooth the flow of traffic and enabling cars to legitimately park on both sides.

Pedestrianisation of the street between the St Fagan's Hotel and Shaws could provide a focal point - almost a town square atmosphere - where events could take place.

Traders could even have outdoor stalls. It works in other towns and I'm sure it could work in Penarth.

I hope the Vale council move forward on this issue and if there is to be consultation, it should include every council tax payer in Penarth because the future of our town is the responsibility of us all.
