Youth match is holiday highlight

THE FAMOUS Good Friday encounter between Penarth and the Barbarians XV may be a thing of the past - but thanks to a new sponsorship deal, a match involving the rugby stars of tomorrow will provide a fitting replacement.

The Penarth Youth versus Crawshay's Welsh Youth XV match with kick-off at the same famous Penarth Ground tomorrow (Good Friday), April 18 at 3pm with Principality Society backing the fixture as match sponsor.

The fixture will have added importance for the talented Crawshays' team, as it is the squad's last match before a summer tour to South Africa in July.

"This will be the third year we've held this match and our crowd numbers have grown considerably," said Penarth Youth RFC Chairman, E I (Yan) Owens.

"The backing of the Principality has helped us put on what promises to be a superb Easter holiday fixture for the Club."

"In many ways it is a shame that the Barbarians fixture has become a victim of the professional era, but, I think we have got a fitting, if rather different, replacement lined up for rugby fans."

Bill Mayne, Sales & Marketing Director of Principality said: "The Principality has a great tradition of supporting rugby throughout Wales, and we are very pleased on this occasion to be involved in a fixture that will display the talents of top players of the future."

Penarth Youth are approaching the end of another successful season having won their section of the Dragon's Trust National Welsh Youth League.

A match between Penarth U-11s and U-12s will precede the main match, which is due to kick off at 3pm on Good Friday, and with other attractions available, should ensure a good afternoon's entertainment.
