PENARTH town mayor David Clapham has hosted a reception to launch the Penarth Saint Pol de Leon Twinning Association.
He launched the scheme in the presence of both the newly formed association and members of the Town Council's Twinning Committee who had sown the seeds of the idea of forming an association as far back as the year 2000.
The object of the scheme is the promotion of friendship and understanding by all possible means between the twinned towns of Penarth and Saint Pol de Leon in France.
Association Chairman John Martin said: "Following the council's initiative a public meeting was held resulting in the appointment of a steering group which assessed the extent of interest in Penarth for twinning activities.
"Several members of the steering group visited the town last autumn to meet with the Saint Pol Twinning Association. The visit was a successful one and convinced us to go ahead with setting up the Penarth Association."
Councillor Nigel Gibbs, chairman of the town council's planning committee, expressed the council's pleasure at the new group.
He said: "The committee was looking for ways of building on the success of 30 years of twinning with Saint Pol de Leon. The new association will provide the focus for wider participation and interest in the links between the two towns and we would like to hear from anyone interested in developing cultural and sporting links.
"The committee is looking forward to working closely with the association in promoting future links with Saint Pol de Leon."
For more information about the association contact John Martin on 2070 1247 or the town council on 2070 0721.
