FOR DIE-hard fans of Madonna, there will be no way this CD will not find a space in your collection. But for your average pop consumer, there is not an awful lot to attract you to American Life.
With more image changes than you can shake a stick at, Madonna has re-invented herself untold number of times.
From the girly Marilyn Monroe look to punk, sex kitten, Catholic peasant, new age hippie, Geisha and glitzy cowgirl, right up to the newest military style, Madonna has taken every idea she has ever had and made herself into an icon.
But unfortunately, her music seems to be lacking that same sense of individuality.
On American Life, there are a good few flashes of inspiration.
With some strong lyrics, the title track challenges what people might think of this living legend.
But otherwise, there are few surprises.
It could be completely off track, but if you listen to the words in any depth, Madge is just telling you her life story - but not in any way that you might find interesting.
Don't be put off, though.
This is definitely a time when you will have to make your mind up on a personal level.
But perhaps you would be better off finding one of those die-hard fans and having a quick listen first.
