VOLUNTARY-run groups play an important role in local communities, but at a meeting organised by the Penarth Community Development Association, it was sad to witness the few dedicated and valiant individuals striving against apathy to improve conditions in our locality.

Whether it be victim support or protecting our communal areas against vandalism, these unrecognised groups are ignored by the media.

What is the point of being lectured on how to work within their constitutions when the general public is unaware that they even exist?

If the local press covered current activities within the community, rather than a reminder of events that took place some 25 years ago, it would be a step in the right direction.

I am uncertain as to why the meeting was chaired by an AM as the Assembly does not directly involve itself with self-help groups and offers no financial assistance.

It must be stressed that if it were not for volunteers willing to play an active part in local affairs, council officers and AMs would have a much heavier workload, leaving them less time to attend their ego inflating functions.
