Car parking

TO THE people of Penarth. As you will know by now the Vale of Glamorgan Council have embarked on the pedestrianisation of Lower Glebe Street.

The immediate affect of this has been a reduction of trade for shops in the area.

Realistically, what Penarth needs is a small multi-storey car park adjacent to the town centre. Is it beyond the wit of the Vale of Glamorgan Council to realise this?

Penarth must be the only town of its size in the UK without a car park.

I hope some of our councillors feel at least a little ashamed of this fact in this, the 21st Century.

Many of our customers are dismayed and perplexed by the way the council has implemented these changes without much in the way of consultation.

The town manager declares that he is going to lay on events and street entertainers to promote Penarth and so bring in lots of visitors from all over south Wales.

This of course would be marvellous, if only we had somewhere for these visitors to park their cars.

On behalf of the people of Penarth, I appeal to the council to halt this scheme before it is too late.

Traders in Glebe Street and beyond are suffering a downturn in sales now.

If this situation continues some traders may be forced to pull out of Penarth.

Many concerned customers have suggested sites for a car park which include the old post office, the Dingle and over the railway lines, to mention but a few.

I am sure that many people in the town could come up with even more.

I believe that for the town to really come to life and thrive, pedestrianisation would indeed be an excellent move forward, but only if the parking situation is sorted out intelligently and most importantly prior to the closure of any roads.

This is the age of the car; therefore towns and cities have to cater for motorists.

Without doubt in my mind the three most important things required of any town are PARKING, PARKING, PARKING.
