PENARTH is growing and prospering, according to Vale of Glamorgan Councillor Mike Harvey - but the key to success is changing people's attitudes towards the town.
Speaking exclusively to the Times, Cllr Harvey, Cabinet member for Economic Regeneration, insists there is a lot to be excited about.
He said: "I think gaining full public confidence that the council have turned the corner and are making progress is our biggest challenge. We've made many changes. I think the State of the Area debate showed we are moving in the right direction."
With so many developments that have already taken place in Penarth, there are certain issues that still need to be tackled. Cllr Harvey added: "There are places in Penarth where regeneration has already taken place, like the Marina. With the Custom House renovated, the whole area is blossoming.
"But what is really important is the town centre itself. Traffic control and sufficient parking would turn Penarth into a spectacular shopping area. The situation with Glebe Street traders and the pedestrianised area is obviously important. We want to stress that it is a temporary experiment, and if it doesn't work, it will be removed. If it does work, the parking will be the next issue to tackle."
Excited about the plans to join Penarth with Cardiff, Cllr Harvey is keen on the Headland Link project. He said: "The chance to bring the Esplanade in Penarth to life by linking it to Cardiff Bay is fantastic. It is a thrilling project."
Arguably the most contentious issue for Economic Development is keeping the faith of the public. Cllr Harvey added: "I don't think there is one issue that sticks out more than any other.
"We have plans in place to remedy all sorts of problems. But we must never get complacent."
