Garden plans finally flower

DELIGHTED Penarth school pupils have finally finished a TV garden project which was stalled by atrocious weather last month.

Ysgol Pen-y-Garth on Redlands Road were extremely disappointed when S4C gardening programme Clwb Garddio was forced to postpone their recent garden make-over.

It was the first time TV producers of the eight-year-old show were beaten by the weather.

Producer of the show Rena Griffiths, said: "This time the weather was the total opposite of the May rain and storms.

"We are very happy that we managed to complete the garden for the school."

Parent and main garden designer for the plot, Eileen Wood, said: "There are different areas of the garden which show the children all about nature. It is like an extra room in which the children can learn first hand about science.

"Maths, science and geography can be taught in the garden. Science can be seen in the flowers, insects and other wildlife which will visit the land.

"Maths can be incorporated because of the sundial and there is also a mosaic compass point designed by the children which shows various landmarks.

"Butterflies, birds and insects will find plenty of food to survive on here."

The project was instigated by parent Fiona Morgan who was instrumental in getting S4C to come to the school.

And Headmistress Iona Edwards was delighted with the finished result: "It is a great way to teach children.

"We will be holding lessons in the garden and children will draw lots of the wildlife.

"They will do other experiments to see how nature reacts in different environments, too."

The school and S4C would like to thank Brynawel Garden Centre for donating all the plants and Wasons for donating other goods.

S4C will be showing the garden transformation at the beginning of July.
